Caring for Your Jewellery

Your jewellery will give you a lifetime of enjoyment if you take a little care of it. Store it in a jewellery box and keep pieces separate so that they do not scratch each other. They are best wrapped in cloth individually. Hang chains if possible so that they do not tangle.

Avoid all contact with chemicals such as hair spray, cosmetics and perfume. (Brides beware, you do not want black marks on your skin on your special day!) Do not go swimming whilst wearing jewellery.

When getting dressed, always put your jewellery on last to prevent damage both to your jewellery and your clothes.

Silver

Silver naturally tarnishes over time when it is in contact with the air, your skin and the chemicals you come into contact with.

To keep your silver jewellery sparkling clean, polish it regularly and gently with a special silver cloth which is impregnated with a cleaner.

Silver dip can be used if the tarnish is particularly bad but only if the piece of jewellery is made of silver alone. Gemstones and platings can be damaged by silver dip.

Rhodium-plated Jewellery

Rhodium-plated jewellery will stay clean and sparkly and will not tarnish in the air. It should not be cleaned either with a silver cloth or a dip as this may damage the plating.

Rings

Remove your rings when bathing, washing up in the kitchen, kneading bread, etc.

Nose Studs

Wear plain nose studs without gemstones when you go to bed. Some stones are glued into position and may fall out when rubbing on the pillow during the night.

Gemstones

Some gemstones can be cleaned with a gentle wash with soap and water before being rinsed and patted dry with a soft cloth. Pearls and gemstones with inclusions such as turquoise, lapis lazuli and malachite should not be put in water as this may damage them.

If in doubt seek professional advice.
